
WILLY VIVIANI
Team Lead, Mathematics Empowerment Through Standards Based Grading
Willy Viviani is currently the Team Lead for the library team in 21PSTEM's Math Empowerment through Standards-Based Grading project. His research interests focus on understanding and addressing the barriers to, and opportunities for, teacher and student agency in math classrooms.
Willy earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Maryland, where he spent eight years preparing preservice teachers through both coursework and field supervision. Prior to his work in higher education, he taught high school mathematics to students in grades 9 through 12. His career in education began as a teaching assistant in a secondary school, supporting students in math and science.

Most recently, Willy contributed to a formative assessment project that leveraged interactive digital tools to assess student thinking on open-ended math problems. He has also collaborated with schools on initiatives grounded in Improvement Science, helping educators develop and implement strategies to enhance students’ mathematical reasoning.
